What can a folk song awaken in us? Is it emotions? Memories? Creativity? What stories lie hidden within it?
These are the questions Alena Hron asks herself as she sets aside the baton this time and picks up her violin and looper. South Czech Philharmonic her longtime collaborator, Czech composer Lukáš Janata, and American musical storyteller Erika Ji to join South Czech Philharmonic .
Together with members of the philharmonic, they create a carefully crafted evening that blends folk songs, collective improvisation, and a shared musical space.
However, the evening is not just a series of arrangements. Here, the folk song serves as a starting point—musical and emotional material that transforms, layers, fades, and reemerges in new contexts.
The project builds on previous collaborations of this kind between Alena Hron and Lukáš Janata, in which the concert becomes a setting for a shared experience—between the musicians, the audience, and the space itself.
This time, however, the production is enriched by the presence of Erika Ji, whose experience on both the Broadway and experimental New York theater scenes adds another layer of storytelling—one that is unique in the context of Czech folk songs.
You can look forward to an evening full of individual and collective emotions, colors, and folk melodies—some of which you may or may not recognize—presented in a colorful new arrangement by Hron, Janata, and Ji.
